In the wake of the pandemic, we have identified a gap in terms of healthy and nutritious food provision for the elderly in Dyffryn Ogwen. In addition to the food provision, we have recognised that isolation has been a challenge for the elderly during the Pandemic. The Community Friend project was established in 2020/21 as a result of the Pandemic.
It started when Caffi Coed y Brenin offered food to the residents of Dyffryn Ogwen. During the deliveries, the Community Friend has a conversation with the individuals giving them an opportunity to socialise, but also gives the Friend an opportunity to identify any challenges faced by the individuals. Currently food deliveries take place on Thursdays.
We work together with Gwynedd Council's Social Services Department to identify vulnerable residents in the community and try to offer help. This led to another element of the Community Friend project which was house visits. As some are self-isolating in the community, we offer a home support service. The Friend will visit the individual once a week for a chat and a cup of tea and to possibly collect a prescription.
Our main objective is to try to reduce isolation and promote the well-being of older people who have suffered as a result of the pandemic. We hold coffee afternoons every second week at Cefnfaes Centre, which also include different activities such as lectures about the history of the area, musical sessions and bingo. Transport is available to the coffee afternoons in our electric vehicles. As a further development from the coffee afternoons, we also run trips for the residents of Dyffryn Ogwen in the electric vehicles and we also work together with Cartref Plas Ogwen to offer leisure trips.
The Community Friend project is part of the Dyffryn Gwyrdd project that is a part of Partneriaeth Ogwen.
